Hello friends. My little boy here is beginning to annoy me. He is the first one to try to wake me and sits and stares at me in the am (waiting for food). After many (costly) attempts to find something he likes I hit on an expensive brand that he originally demolished. Now I place it out and he eats perhaps a few bites (or licks since he had all of his decayed teeth removed) and ignores for the rest of the day. He gets one can of this wet food in am, dry food left out, and a snack at 3:30 pm (those small lickable treats). What does everyone think or suggest, if at all? I am going to stop buying this expensive food if he won't eat more of it. It will join a large group of ignored products I have purchased and he just walks away. Help!!!!

If your cat had several teeth removed recently he may still have some mouth pain that is causing this. But even if it has been several weeks and he is all healed, he may not feel comfortable eating the same textures he used to like. I think the first thing I would try is to take a smaller amount of the food and mash it up with some water, making it a mush that he can lick up rather than having to chew anything at all.

You might also stop leaving dry food out for him if he is not eating it. Dry food is not as good for cats as wet food is, in any case. And I also suggest that you stop the lickable treat, since this probably has little to no nutritional value, until he starts eating the wet food again.

He had his teeth removed at least 18 months ago. When I rescued him he had abscesses and would cry out in pain. He's always enjoyed his dry food and seems to have no trouble eating it (and does). I'll try using a smaller amount of food and mushing it up with water. In the past, he's been eating the wet food with no problem except for his pickiness. Do you think I should just keep spending money to switch out different brands while I have literally a shelf full of food and flavor here in my kitchen?

Most places will let you return the uneaten foods so you are not out money for that. If you by at a supermarket or at PetSmart or Petco, they always allow returns within a certain amount of time. I have done that several times myself.

It is possible that you switching the food around a lot has exacerbated or even caused the problem, because he might see this as a way to get something new. Just a thought....and certainly not any criticism of what you have been doing. After all, you want him to be happy with what he eats. But you might try just continuing to feed the same thing and if he doesn't eat it you wrap it up, refrigerate it, and put it down again later.

Unfortunately, you can't let a cat go for more than about 36 hours without eating anything at all, as it is detrimental to their health. But what you can do is pick up the dry food, and not leave it out all day. Having that always available makes it really easy for him to eat only that. Put down the wet food in the morning, put it away again if he doesn't eat it. Put the dry food down in the evening, put it away when he is done eating or only put down the amount he will eat. The next morning, put down the wet food again, repeat.
