I strongly advise you to talk to your vet about this and get dosage information from him. Again, I don't think that pumpkin or other fiber additives are the answer to your cat's constipation. I think you'll be a lot better off with a stool softener. Of course, I'm not a vet.

I heard someone else on here recommend (or had it recommended) to feed their cat Pumpkin to help with constipation as well. I would definatly get the specifics from your vet.
Although Belfour once at 1/4 of my Thanksgiving Pumpkin pie while it was cooling on the counter.

IF you are using pumpkin only used the canned plain pumpkin, not the pie filling. BIG difference. Pumpkin is supposed to work both ways, supposed to help with diarrhea or constipation. I see this ALL the TIME on a dog forum I frequent and people swear by it. They are only giving DOGS 1 tablespoon at a time though, so I'd less than that for a cat.

I also second Annissa's recommendation to get your cat to the vet. If this is an ongoing problem, I wouldn't want to mask it with the pumpkin, you want to get to the root of the problem!

Pumpkin is a common fiber additive to cat food because it contains a lot of psyllium (as a side note, it's also very high in sugar). However, fiber only helps the cat if the constipation is caused by a lack of fiber in the first place. In myfamilia's case, the constipation is caused by a medical problem, not lack of fiber (at least, that's what I understand from her previous posts; I might be mistaken). If the kitty gets too much fiber, the constipation will get much, much worse and might result in multiple enemas for the poor kitty. And that is why I'm recommending a vet visit. The vet might say the pumpkin will help the problem, but I don't want to recommend a fiber additive if it's only going to make the problem worse. I'm really not trying to pick on myfamilia. I personally add psyllium powder and a stool softener to Sabby because he has chronic constipation.

The vet did say that pumpkin would be good when Bugs was seen last. The thing is, is that I didn't ask how much would be good because I had not had any luck in the past getting him to eat it. She said, it was her thought, that he was having problems with being constipated because the bone degeneration in his spine is in a place that would make having a bowel movement somewhat painful. Especially if any straining were involved. She gave me Torbugesic & VAL syrup to give to him for pain, but it wasn't her first recomendation and only gave me a small amount to try since adding fiber (pumpkin) wasn't something Bugs was willing to do. How much fiber is enough fiber from cat food alone?
She also mentioned a stool softener but it was actually the last thing she would recomend. I can't remember what she said was her reason why was, but I'll call her tomorow.
And I don't feel picked on Annissa, just the opposite. I welcome all comments and advice. Much appreciated
