How do cats purrr? Is it coming from their stomach area?

What about other animals, like tygers? Do they purr too?

As I understand it, cats purr from their throats. Most cats (including most wild, large cats) purr, when they are contented. Also, purring is used by them to comfort themselves, especially when under stress of pain.
