I'm visiting my mom for Christmas and she has a kitty, Katie, that she found a few months ago. I think she might be about 6 months old or so. Anyway, she went into heat last month and my mom was wondering how often Katie will go through this? Also, what can she do to help Katie through it..or is she alright just being left alone?

Different cats have different cycles. My fertile female goes into heat once every month, some only go into heat once or twice a year.

Just leave the cat alone, there's not much to do. The cat isn't in pain, she's just longing for a male.

If you're not thinking about breeding you should neuter/spay the cat since the risk for tumors and uterus infections is larger for fertile cats.

There's not much you can do while she is in heat but please get her spayed as soon as possible, especially if you are not planning to breed. Also do not let the cat outside at all since she may come back pregnant, which is something that I'm sure you don't want, especially from an unknown cat. Good Luck
