i was just curious to know about spas...if any of you guys ever go for facials or anything liek that...do you tip the person giving you the facial or jsut pay for it how ever much they charge? One of my friends that goes says she tips also ..around $5 or 10 ...now maybe this is what you are supposed to do..i'm not really sure..but the way i think of it is what is $5 to them? if someoen gives them a tip it should be higher or else what is the point of giving it? i am already being charged for it anyway...but if im supposed too then i guess i will

Whenever I go to the beauticians (and the hairdressers) I always leave a tip. I think it is the norm even though, like you say you will already have paid for the treatments. I don't base it on a percentage of the treatment cost but usually just leave between £2 and £5 depending on how I am feeling (I think that fits in with between $5 and $10). Usually £5 if I am feeling super dooper relaxed after a nice massage or facial :)

Good question. Well, in a salon, there's the salon owner who gets a percentage of everyone else's take because the owner provides the salon and furnishings. The salon owner also pays the commercial property tax, insurance, utilities, maintenance. Those who do hair, skin, nails provide their own products unless they have an agreement with the salon owner to purchase their product from the owner at wholesale cost.

Basically, as I understand it, the hair, skin, or nail people rent or lease the spot from the salon owner to conduct their business. This said, I think tipping is in order, as they get to keep this portion for themselves. As a rule of thumb, I tip anywhere between 10-25% depending on the cost of service and my satisfaction level.
