Hi,

Our 9 year old cat has some type of dermatitus around his neck. We have tried several things to try to take care of the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can care for this rash without a great deal of expense?

Have you asked or went to your vet to see what the rash is? If not, maybe a vet visit could help so they can see what kind of rash it is and give you some medication for it. It shouldn't be that much for some rash cream, my cat Twinkie had ring worm before and I had no idea what it was until I went to my vet and the cream was fairly cheap too! Good Luck!

Couple of questions.

Does your cat wear a regular collar?
Has your cat warn a flea collar recently?
Does your cat have fleas, check for flea "dirt" or their eggs, not just adults.

All of these are possible causes, and there is more which could be affecting it. Is there any hair loss where this rash is? Is the rash really red, or does it have open skin with scabs on them?

I think it would be a good idea to take your cat to the vet, specially if this has been going on for a while.

Flea Allergy

The rash around the neck could be a flea allergy. I have one cat with a flea allergy and when she had a flea, which was sometime ago, she broke out in a rash around her neck. After 3 days of having the Frontline on, the rash begin to go away and hasn't been back. My sister's outdoor cat has the same allergy. Make sure you are putting either Frontline or Advantage on your cat to control fleas.
