I started Bosco on the wet food diet on May 27th......
He weighed 17 pounds!

I weighed him last night and this morning...August 5th...
He now weighs 15 pounds! YAY!! :D

Anyone else? What has your cats weight loss been?
Is this a healthy rate of weight loss?

The weight loss is a *bit* fast and you should try and slow it down now that Bosco is getting to a more normal weight. I'm glad the diet is working for you!

For my kitties, their weight loss took one year. They lost about 1/2 per month and between the three of them lost 14 lbs!

You want to be careful to not have the cat lose *too* much weight per month, because he could get fatty liver disease. Your best bet is to weigh Bosco every 3-4 weeks. These weight checkups are free (you just use their scale). That way you can track the weight loss and make sure he isn't losing too much weight in a small amount of time.

Thanks for you input! O.k. A little fast, huh?

I will take your advice and weigh him every 3 weeks.
I just do it at home here....I bet he lost more weight initially
because it took a good month or better to get him to really
accept the canned food.

He is now eating regularly and eating his full meal when offered. :D

I thought a pound a month was a good normal weight loss?

Shlanon, I was informed by my vet and some internet sources that 1/2 a month is what to aim for. Losing weight too fast can result in serious illness so I like to err on the safe side. 1 lb a month loss for an obese cat is like 15 lbs a month loss for an obese person. I know that weight watchers aims for 1-2 lbs a week for humans. So I think it is better to have a gradual weight loss and spread it out over a longer period of time.

Pro Plan Beef & Liver....a.m. feeding
Fancy Feast Grilled Chicken Feast in Gravy....afternoon feeding
Nutro Pouch (any flavor)....p.m. feeding

This is his diet....It is working perfect for him.
I finally figured out what he likes and what he will actually eat.
I know its different brand 3 times a day.
But everything in the litterbox looks wonderful! :D

1lb a month is quite a lot. I can't even imagine it. I was really worried about my cat who was losing 0.5lb a month. Fortunately this was during a period of frequent vet visits for a yeast infection in the ear and the assured me it was ok.

Little do they know that my other cat has gained 3-4lbs in the past year despite getting way less food than the one who lost weight. I am sure they will be less than thrilled. She started out at 10lbs at the humane society, and my other cat started at 15lbs. Now she weights about 13 and so does he. And he's much bigger framed.

Seems everyone agrees that 1 pound a month is too fast.
I am glad I asked...I will keep track....I have a feeling it will slow down though becuase he is eating so well now.

He is very fullfilled with his diet.
He is not meowing at me begging for food at all!
He hops up to the counter when he knows it is mealtime.

When he was eating dry food he meowed and called ALOT!
It was so irritating!
He no longer harrasses me for water either!

The amount of urine clumps in the litter box are unreal!
THere are about 10 pee clumps to 2 poops. Awesome!

Woohoo!! Way to go!

Yah, kinda rapid for the weight loss. It took 7 months for Ginza and Mozart to lose 3 lbs, and for Kayla to lose 2 lbs. They're almost there, just a half pound more to go.

I think my big guy, Jack, has lost a bit of weight, but not sure. He's so darned furry, and his big belly still looks pretty sizeable! In any event, his fur is sooooo sleek, silky and soft, even if he didn't lose weight, I'm so impressed by his new coat, that I'd stick it out for that alone.

Justin may have lost a little weight...it's hard to tell because the scale isn't very accurate (we weigh ourselves holding him, then ourselves and subtract). Maybe a pound over the last two months.
His fur is also much nicer...it more sleek and healthy feeling. :D
