We just brought our new kitty home yesterday from the Town Lake Animal Center here in Austin. Her name is "Daisy" and she's a 2-year-old Calico, short-haired, 7lbs. She's really sweet and absolutely perfect! I'm really excited because I've been wanting a cat ever since my last one died 10 years ago. I'm glad that my girlfriend likes them too, even though she's more of a dog person ;)

Here are some pics:

LOL! Last night we were trying to go to bed, so I put the cat in her bed against the wall in our room. I pet her for awhile and she went to sleep, so I went and get in bed myself.

A little later we hear, "jingle jingle jingle" (there's a bell on her collar)... then see that the bed is empty. We start looking around then feel a soft "thud" at the foot of the bed. She walked up to the area between us, got right up to the pillow, then plopped down like she was the queen of the bed. "Hello humans... I think I will rest now". HAHA!!

I ended up having to put her bed on a chair, then putting the chair right next to my side of the bed so I could pet her throughout the night. It also made her feel like she was in the bed with us I think. She's just so cuddly.... must resist!!! lol!

It is much harder for them to adopt out the adults at the shelter. They were glad that we wanted an adult and not a kitten like everyone else! I was also impressed with how nice the shelter is and how well they take care of their animals. You can tell that they really care about all of them and do their best for them :)

Austin also has a law against the selling of cats or dogs within the entire metro area. They did this because the shelter was having to put down 70+ dogs and cats per day, so they passed the law to encourage people to adopt homeless animals instead of buying new ones. I think that's great and I think more cities should do it!

Aww she is gorgeous!!

I think that's a fabulous law and I agree that more cities should do it. It warms my heart that she is so cuddly and has accepted you so quickly. How cute! May she bring you years of happiness!

Hello kitty! She is very beautiful and looks so cudley! I'm glad your girlfriend likes cats too. ^_^

I was a little worried about my fiance and how he would deal with me wanting cats (since I know he is a dog lover extrodinaire!) It was great when he was willing to get me a kitty too.

So are they stopping breeding programs over there? Or is it the uncontroled breeding that they are targeting? It would seem a shame if they did that - since breeders are much more responsible than the average cat owner.

Whatever the case - I'm glad that your kitty cat worked out and is making you too so happy. ^_^ So cute!

I'm not entirely sure about that. I have noticed, though, that you don't see breeders in Austin, but you see them around Austin. I don't know if that's because they don't allow it in the city limits or what.

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

She is very pretty, I love calicos and their colors. I also have adopted my 2 cats from the Town Lake Animal Shelter in Austin. So now I know why I see pets being sold in Cedar Park area

What a beautiful kitty!!

I too adopted an adult from a shelter instead of a kitten
They thought he was 5 but my vet says he is younger....just over 3 and a half now.

There are so many adults just waiting to be taken home

I think it's great to adopt adult animals rather than babies, and that law sounds wonderful! I'm sure it does mean fewer animals are killed every year.

I did get all our cats as kittens--but we've never bought a pet; all rescues/adoptions. I believe strongly in adoption rather than buying. Anyway, we got our dog as an adult--thank goodness! I don't think I would have had the patience for puppy training!
