Congratulations to me, I officially just put my entire apartment building at risk of burning down. :( This is why you shouldn't cook first thing in the morning.

I soaked some kidney and garbanzo beans overnight, and when I stumbled into the kitchen for breakfast this morning I put them on the stove to start simmering. I turned the heat up a bit high and meant to check on it and turn it down once it had reached a boil. You can guess what happened next. I got distracted making travel plans on the Internet and forgot all about it. I'm sitting in my living room and suddenly I smell something which smells like toast fresh out of the toaster. This makes me happy because nobody eats toast in China. I don't even own a toaster or oven of any sort. Then I realized that it was very strange that I smelled "toast", given the above statements. I wondered, "have I left anything burning?", no...the only thing I'd made that morning was oatmeal in the microwave. Back to the internet, when 30 seconds later it hits me, "OH NO! MY BEANS!". I rush into the kitchen to find it filled with smoke and my beans blackened at the bottom of the pot  :( :(

I feel so irresponsible! I've never left anything burning before. We don't even have smoke detectors here. They're not required by law. I kept meaning to buy some but never saw them for sale anywhere and never went out of my way to look. Now I'm definitely buying some if my new apartment doesn't have them. I got an email from my recruiting agency a few months ago that talked about an American teacher stationed in Korea who died when his smoke detector-less apartment caught fire after his gas was left on. It made me extremely sad. I can't believe I was so careless.[/img]

I'm glad I'm not the only one, but I don't usually do things like that! Over 24 hours later nd my kitchen still smells like burned beans and I've scrubbed that pot many times now and it's still somewhat charred looking on the bottom

Did you see Tim's post last week where he tried to burn down his house with just water in a pot? We all do things like that. I am so glad that you caught it before it got too bad.
