Please take precautions:

Subject: Summer Safety Alert

Methamphetamine cooks are buying propane tanks from the exchanges at

Wal-Mart, Kroger, and emptying them of the propane gas. Then they fill the

propane tanks with anhydrous ammonia, which they now have a recipe to cook

Methamphetamine. After they are finished with the propane tanks, they

return them to the store. The stores refill the tanks with propane gas,

unknowing to them the improper substance that was inserted in the tanks and

sell them to their consumers. Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and

weakens the structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with

propane gas and hooked up to a grill, recreation vehicle, etc.

You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around

the valve areas. If there are evidences of these substances, do not

purchase the propane tank and advise the vendor of your findings.

The information was researched, and you should check out the following

website for more details. They also have pictures for you to view.

OMG WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!

I once seriously annoyed off someone when I "snopesed" some sob story about a kid with an incurable disease.

1) it was untrue
and
2) what was sending a load of spam going to do for the kid?

she replied bleating on about how if we did this, maybe someone would get it who could do something

It's worse than those begging letters you get at Christmas...

Seriously though, who the **** uses propane to light a BBQ?

All you need is good charcol, a couple of litres of lighter fluid and 4 dozen matches :D

I don't barbeque with propane myself, but I would think that the vendors of these tanks would be aware of this if it was this big of a problem, and be looking for it, and be able to spot it a heck of a lot better than we could.

Hugh's comment points out the flip side of being too careful in that it does indeed take about four boxes of matches to light lighter fluid these days. I suppose they got tired of being sued by stupid people and so they reduced the flammability of their fluid to be about the same as water.

I use propane and even if this was true you couldnt check the values because they have that yellow plastic cover on it so that they know which ones are empty and full.

Unfortunately, most people I know barbecue with a propane fired grill these days and I use one myself 'cause I just can't be bothered messin' with charcoal. Only true purists like to frustrate/torment themselves with a charcoal fired grill.

[edit to add]
Hugh, we don't light charcoal with propane............we cook over it's flames.

I heard on the radio that Hoogan's BBQ'er was recalled due to fire hazard but when reading more into the article turns out that some people use oil to BBQ so that's why, I don't see how his BBQ'er can be recalled, any BBQ'er would do that if you use OIL!!
