I can’t tell if our new cat is trying to be nice or mean.

We adopted her about 5 months ago, and for the most part she gets along with or other cat, whom we had about 3 years.

First then new cat (Gypsy) is about five and the cat we’ve had for a while (Kit) is 9. The new cat definitely has a ton of energy and often wants to play with the other cat who usually just gets annoyed and runs off.

Lately she has been walking over to kit and gently putting her paw on Kit, usually on her body or the top of her head. Kit usually gets annoyed and walks off or occasionally give Gypsy a whack or two. No serious fighting.

So it the new cat trying to assert dominance or is she trying to be nice. It sure looks like she is just trying to get some attention from Kit, but so far Kit is not having it.

regards,
Brian

Paw on the top of the head, and licking the top of the head are both dominance maneuvers, so your new kitty is trying to usurp the local authority. I don't have any suggestions except to just let nature take its course. If there is to be a change in status in the house, then that will happen regardless of what we do. As long as they arent hurting each other, it should be fine. Once its settled, I think you will find they will be more friendly to each other.
