Since males reach puberty at around 6 months, it is recommended that you get him neutered around then. During puberty, the male cat is more likely to spray to mark his territory, roam if he's an semi/outdoor cat, grow a thicker facial structure--as you often see on male strays (i.e. the "butch look"), and will grow spurs on his penis. If you get him neutered before 6 months, you will ensure that none of this happens because of his hormones.
