Abuse shelters should also allow pets to be housed with them, but I can see how this just can't be accommodated in a dorm style setting. This would save a lot of pets AND help the healing process for the victims if it could though. Children and pets are also in danger when a spouse gets violent.

I worked in a DV shelter for years and also worked for Child Protection. In both places there was a spot on the intake form asking about pets and pet violence.

In an ideal world, it would be AMAZING if an animal shelter could be located near and work with a DV shelter or foster group homes. The mom/children could have their safe place and the animal shelter could help house their pet for them while they are there. The animal shelter would obviously benefit from a lot of moms/children who would be able to give extra loving, walking, cleaning, etc help to the animal shelter animals as well. Those animal shelter animals would be able to be more socialize and perhaps more adoptable! Win-win for everyone. ideal world....
