Falling Crucifix Kills Woman

ROME (Reuters) - A 67-year-old woman was killed when a three-meter tall metal crucifix fell on her head in a small southern Italian town on Wednesday, police said.

The cross, which has been in the main square on Sant'Onofrio for decades, fell on Maddalena Camillo while workers were setting up lights for an annual religious festival.

Italy, home to the Vatican City, is a predominantly Roman Catholic country where crucifixes and religious icons and effigies are a common sight in most towns and villages.

Well, here's one for you.

About a year ago, I noticed that there were some ceiling tiles sagging in the sanctuary of my church, up in the chancel area. I pointed it out to one of the Trustees, who assured me that "everything is alright". (Sure, it's alright, because ~I~ am the one that has to be up there  )

Anyway, about 6 months ago, I mentioned it again. Everything was still alright, according to the powers that be.

Two months ago, I pointed out that there was insulation falling out between the sagging ceiling tiles, so they FINALLY decided to hire a contractor to fix things.

Cause of the sagging tiles? The weight of the BAT guano, from the enormous bat colony that had taken up residence in the attic! Can you say, "histoplasmosis"? As in MAJOR health hazard.

We had to hire a wildlife specialist to come in and net off the entry/exit spots and then when the bats were all displaced, they removed the guano and the celiing. The rafters were so urine-soaked that they had to be dried and then sprayed with a sealer. The general contractor is finishing up with the installation of the new ceiling tiles, this week.

At least I didn't get hit in the head with a falling ceiling. At a cost of some $36,000, though! 8O

We worshipped in the Fellowship Hall for a few weeks and even had to move our services to a member's home for a couple of weeks. I am SO ready to get my sanctuary back.

Peace,
Mike
