My cat was first prescribed prednisolone for her IBD last fall. Initially we tried both liquid and pill forms. We had a stretch of about 4 months during which she took the pills in pill pockets or other combinations of pill wraps/soft treats, but she eventually started to avoid them. I think she found the hidden pill too many times (she'd bite into it and maybe get a bad taste).

I have filled a prescription for the transdermal gel form of prednisolone which is meant to be applied to the inside of the ear, but haven't tried to use it on her yet. Our vet says while it's a good alternative if giving liquid/pills is overly difficult and stressful for the cat, the transdermal gel may be less effective than oral forms. But she also mentioned that over time the gel will cause a cat's ears to droop or fold due to weakening of the skin/cartilage. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this side effect in their cat, and how long it took to get to that point?

Hi mallie,

I've never given a transdermal for more than about 6 or 7 days. After that, my kitty went into hiding whenever she saw me. So transdermals became just as difficult as pilling. I've never heard of drooping ears being a side effect of transdermal gels, although I have a vague recollection that someone might have had this issue, or something similar.

As an alternative, you might try other options for hiding the pill. I used American cheese - just took little bits, folded it around the pill and squished it together into a little ball. I prepared a bunch of those little balls, gave a few plain ones, then the one with the pill, followed by a few more.

Others have used semi-moist treats. Break one open, scoop out the filling, replace it with the pill, and smush it back together. Another trick someone taught me is to roll the pill inside a bit of white bread, then coat the bread with butter. Or if you work quickly, you could even put the pill in a blob of cold butter. Most kitties seem to like butter, and obviously it goes down easily. :)
