How weird
I really can't think what the problem is
he is obviously freaked out about something, but has you said you'd think he would be more inclined to stay in, unless its a territorial thing and he is wanting to go out and mark his territory - it could be something like that

also check him for any scratches or bites, and run your hands over him to see if he flinches, he could have been in a altercation and trying to tell you

other than that I don't know
I'd take him up the vets if he's still acting funny in a few days
