This has probably been asked before so please forgive me for asking it agian.

I have read, and been told by IAMS is the best for older cats but mostly the people telling me this are the people who sell it. What about Science Diet and Purena? Cost is also a small, very small factor, but one non the less in this day and age of economic uncertainty.

I am mainly interesting in what kind of food I should be feeding my cat who is going on 12 years of age now. She like moist cat food, what cat doesn't, but I have been told that feeding her moist cat food will cause health problems.

I asked the vet the other day, and she recommend IAMS. So is IAMS the best? (Note: the vet sells IAMS.)

My cats range in age from 9 months to 19 years old so feeding around here takes on a life of its own.

I have used Purina Senior dry for my older kitties and they like it just fine - I also supplement with some wet food for the older ones *and of course table treats for everybody who loves turkey, etc*

I feed 9+ so cannot affored the more expensive IAMS, etc - (wish I could)

One thing to remember that is important is to have your cats teeth checked at the Vets to make sure they are in good shape and can tolerate the foods.

I know I was shocked last year when my oldest cat's teeth were in such bad shape he needed a LOT of dental work - so I learned a very valuable lesson and he feels better for it and eats better now too!

It's really difficult to label one brand of food as being the best to feed a senior cat because each cat has different needs and there's not one brand of food out there that can cover it all.

As long as she's been checked out recently by a vet and has been given a clean bill of health any of those foods you named are complete and balanced so any of them would be fine.

Moist food is fine if that's what she likes. Most people don't realize it but regular ol dry food doesn't do a lot in ways of cleaning the teeth or preventing periodontal disease but like Piddles mentioned (Hi Pidds! *waves*) keep an eye on her teeth because having good teeth is important in keeping your older cat healthy.

I feed my senior citizen Wellness which I have found has been quite benefical to her. Her coat looks a lot glossier, she's not quite as stiff as she used to be(because the food has glucosamine in it) and she's more playful than she had been in previous years.

I give all my cats Hill's natures best ( science plan) and they love it!!
Their fur is nice and shiny, they look good, and when they have to go to the litter it doesn't smell that bad!

My mom has an older cat and she gives her "science plan senior" and she's also very active and playfull and also has a shiny fur!

Sometimes I gave my cat Iams ( only when they gave free tents away :lol: ) but ever since i saw those pictures on television where iams/eukanuba ( owned by proctor & gamble) did some cruel test on cats and dogs, i stopped buying iams!

Royal Canin and MaxCat Senior

There is a good dry catfood called "Royal Canin" - they have different kinds for all ages of cats. I got it at PetSmart recently and have been giving it to my Ziggy (age 15) and he really likes it. It is especially formulated for his age. He eats a variety of foods though, canned and dry, etc.

There is also a dryfood called "MaxCat Senior" - I've found that's his favorite.I also got it at PetSmart too. This is the first time he's had this kind, maybe thats why he loves it best of all. I believe that these are both good high quality pet foods with premium ingredients especially formulated for older cats.

Petsmart also sells a variety of canned foods many of which do not use by-products. I'd look for petfoods that use high quality ingredients without the use of meat by-products. "Authority" is one brand of canned food that is good.

That is such a horrible thing to do - I cannot stand the thought of it. I know that we have to expect the unexpected but really it is quiete a shock to have this happen from a company that is supposed to put animals first. They should be banned for good if this is really true

We tried Science Diet for our three, but I realised they use animal by-products (aka road-kill, euthanised pets, unusable parts from slaughter houses). Switched to Solid Gold, but the poo smelt awful. Now we're using Felidae, which they all seem to take very well too and their coats look better too.
