I got these 2 cats from my friend last christmas since my friend had to move out of the country and couldn't take care of them anymore. 1 neutered male and 1 spayed female. Both of them are 4 years old now. They didn't seem to be nervous or stressful when they came to my house. After awhile they've been staying in my house, the female cat started peeing right outside of the litter box that I put in the bathroom (in front of the litter box entrance). I usually clean the box like twice a day, and I thought maybe she didn't like it when it's being used, so I increase the number of times scooping it daily. That improve for a bit, but then she still pee outside of the box sometimes when the male cat kick all the litter out of place (especially at night when I can't clean the box for them immediately)...Gradually, the problem expand and she started to pee on floor out of the bathroom (her favorite place is at the corner next to the front door of my house)...I didn't know what to do and thought yelling at her and spanking her butt would teach her a lesson (of course I was wrong!)... and then I took her to the vet for a check up to see if it's medical problem. Vet found no medical problem from her, so confirmed that it's behavior problem... The vet suggested me to try different types of litter box and see if that will interest her, so now I got 4 litter boxes with 1 covered w/ door, 1 covered w/o door, and 2 no cover. At first, she seems to use the ones that has no cover. But then the male cat was like "OMG! new litter box! I better put my butt in it first!"....I purposely purchased 1 of the no cover box smaller in size so it would fit the female cat perfectly but not the male cat (male cat is bigger in size)...but still...even he has to squeeze in there, he still want to use it....and again, kicked the litter out of place...so there she goes again, peeing on floor >_<
I tried using a big exercise ball to block that corner where she would pee at, but then she went into the computer room right next to that corner and pee on the carpet....so I close that door not allowing her to go in, and then she pee in the middle of the stairs where there is a wooden part on the side...And then I also tried changing the litter to "World Best Cat Litter". It help for few days, but then she starts doing that again...
Anyway, this problem occured occasionally, not like a lot to give me headache at first....and then 2 weeks ago, my 2 friends with a baby and a dog moved in to my house temporary....problem expand to way worse situation now....Now she would pee at that corner like few times a day, and even have loose stool (and made an accident with the loose stool on the floor 2 times so far). I was thinking if she's being stessful because of my friends moving in? But the thing is...she knows them since she was a baby...My friends and the mini maltese dog were the roomate of the cats' pervious owner....so the cats and the dog even grew up together before the cats move to my house...They just stopped seeing each other for few months, and finally meet again....would that be a reason to get her being stressful?? I observed the way she pee at that corner, I don't think she was marking territory...she looks like she was doing a normal peeing @_@...She always like to keep her butt close to the wall even when she was peeing in the box. So now that she pees on the floor, she was backing up to the wall to pee too~ But she wasn't spraying it on the wall, she was making a big pee on the floor.
Then I thought maybe locking her up in a different bathroom with litter boxes in there would help her to remember she suppose to pee in the box and not on the floor....I even tried to give her treat whenever I found that she was peeing in the right place. That only last for 1 day of remembering where she should pee for treat, and then back to the corner....That 1 day of remembering to pee in box was kind of funny tho. I actually went out for shopping with my friends for like 6 hours. When I came back home and making sure she didn't pee on the floor again. She was walking slowly in front of me purposely to catch my attention~ and then she purposely run toward the bathroom. So I followed to check on her, she peed in the box!! Of course I have to praise her for doing such a good job!! And I told her to go upstairs with me to get her treat~ And she actually followed me excitedly like she knows it's about treat time! But after I gave her the treat, she just ran away from me =_=....Just seem to me like she was purposely holding for the pee til I come back home so she could show me where the right place for her to use so she could get her treat! But yea...1 day, then back to the corner...oh and 2 days ago, I tried putting a foil paper on that corner and that wooden part of the stairs. She seemed to pee in the box yesterday, which was good~ but found that she peed right on the foil paper at that same corner today....And everytime she did that, she seems like she knows it's a "no no". 'cuz when I passby that "spot", she would run away immediately and hide under the bed...
I've been trying different things already...but I still have no clue why she's doing that....What's making her to do that?? Stress? Doesn't like the litter box or the litter itself??
oh to add one more thing...I heard from the friends who just moved in to my house temporary that this female cat had injured her back leg before (quite a long time ago). She actually fell off from an apartment balcony when she tried to jump from 1 building to another building. We're sure that her leg is cured already. But would that be a problem too that she might thought it's still hurting her so she doesn't want to pee in the box?? But she knows how to poo in there tho....only peeing on the floor now....
ps. I already tried using Nature's Miracle to clean those places...she still knows where she wants to go....
