I was wondering this the other day as I was feeding one of my cats bits of left over ham – I’ve never seen pork cat food. I’ve seen chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, and all kinds of fish, but I’ve never seen anything like “Pork and Rice”. Are cats not supposed to eat pork? I know they like it.

Do you *really* want to know why? It's because of Mad Cow Disease. Since the ban was placed on feeding ruminants to ruminants (a no-brainer if you ask me!), pork has replaced beef as the protein meal fed to ruminants. (Pigs have simple stomachs like people and dogs). So now there's lots of beef by-products left over for pet food, but not much pork.

Cheers,
Dr. Jean

Thanks. I guess it is all about money. My cats will be glad to hear that pork is not bad for them. I know if they got to select what went into cat food the names would be very different. Maybe something like “Rat & Rice” and “Entomologist Feast” to name a few. They don't care much for beef.
