Hi everyone, I have lurked off and on, and I know Heidi n Q from a horse forum. I am a long time cat lover, we have had cats my whole life. Normally we only had 1 or 2, but right now we have 10! We hope to never have this many at once again haha.
See the problem is that our neighbor used to be a spay/neuter coalition and has probably 100 fixed cats running on her 65 acres. Some are totally feral, some clearly had some handling at one point but gone wild to some degree in the mean time. Its been like the hobbits out here, after the first one adopted us it was like he said to us "Thank you for letting me in, but I have a couple friends waiting out in the woods, would it be ok if they came in?" And then the new one asks the same thing haha. Its really fascinating having so many, I love learning the psychology of a large cat pack. Anyway, blah blah, here are some photos of my cats!
This is Doing. Sadly he is no longer with us. He just never came home one day. While he was only about 8 years old, I like to think he died in his sleep, all happy and curled up. More likely, he got ate by a coyote or something terrible like that. He was born feral, and always was a little timid despite his giant size. He was a great hunter and very appreciative, the best gifts he brought us were a bunny and a grey digger squirrel LOL!
This is Mr., he is my sisters cat. The people my parents bought this farm from left him here! Until I moved out here I had no idea people just left their pets for the new home owners... He was also a feral kitten. He is seriously so obese now, its really sad. He cant reach his back to groom himself so we have to give him baths ever other day or so. Its scary because he only loves my sister and is a mean SOB to anyone else haha. That doesnt stop him from curling up in my bed though.
Honna, my moms cat, also once a feral. He adopted us the first winter we lived here, and spent it living under a chair on the porch. We made him a cozy bed and he loved it. He is an indoor/outdoor cat now, but is still really timid, and really untrustworthy because he is a fear biter. We love him anyway though!
This is Maddy. My mom took him, and 4 others (Bunny who is gone, bob, and poochie) from a friend of hers. He is not wild at all.
Poochie is a very old girl. She is missing a lot of teeth, has pillow feet, and bad hips. If you dont know what that is, google it. Its really sad. I dont know her story as she was a stray when my moms friend started feeding her. Poochie has clearly been physically abused, I have been around a lot of wild and timid cats, but none have acted like she does. You have to be very careful how you move around her or you will send her into a panic.
Bob is also ancient, we dont know how old he really is, besides older than dirt haha. He has 6 teeth left lmao. He is one of the most annoying cats in the world, he really is terrible, and while he has some really endearing, lovable qualities, he is pretty hard to live with. I guess that is just kind of a given with anything that is as old as he is LOL. I just have faith that he cant live all that much longer, so I will just keep loving him until he goes.
This is Kiki. He was also a feral kitten, and had very minimal handling. I spent 6 months wooing him, and it was my sister who finally touched him for the first time.
This is Tommy. He is our newest feral. He has been here for goign on 3 years, but in the last year he has made a lot of progress. I got him trapped and neutered about 4 months ago, and he has come leaps and bounds since! He TOUCHED me for the first time today!!!!! He had to touch my finger tips to get to some smoked salmon on the floor, and then he ate off my hand! I will be petting him in no time! He is my first, truly feral cat I have tamed. I do not think he has had any handling at all. Here he is in his bed on our couch on the porch.
