Alternative treatments for Giardia - Do they exist?

All, i'm in serious need of an alternative treatment. My cat devloped giardiasis (soft poo and diarrhea) shortly after being introduced to my home. I was unable to pill the cat under any circumstance living alone and mixed metro/panacur in his food. Luckily after 2 week long treatments it went away. Then a few months later I added another cat which introduced giariasis again. This time to both. I was faced with treating two cats that I could not pill. This time 2 rounds of panacur/metro mixed with food did not work. Now i'm in a bind. It's going on 6 months and I need to fix this problem. Poo is "soft" but not fully runny. Very smelly though. Are there any other types of treatment that I can consider? such as transdermal meds, shots, or even "treats" ? Im in serious need of help here because ive exhausted all resources.

Well the cats are ferrel like, and pilling is quite the traumatic experience, leading them to hide and run at all times. I live alone so its difficult. I've tried wrapping, using tuna, pill pockets, syringes, etc. These arent the types of cats to stay put on a table top or lap. Thank you

When you say metro...you mean metronidazole corrrect? That's some awfully nasty tasting stuff (yes I accidentally got some in my mouth one time). I had a cat that I needed to give it to on a regular basis, the only way I was successful was to have it compounded into a gel cap and use a pill shooter. She couldn't taste it and she didn't fight the process as badly. Doesn't sound like your two will settle enough for you to try it though.

I can sympathize... I had to pill my late cat, Smoky, once and it was such a traumatic experience for both of us that I knew right away it wasn't going to work. Fortunately there was a liquid alternative I was able to put in his water dish that worked. But that's not always the case, and I don't have any experience with giardia. I hope you find a solution b/c I know how hard it is to try to give cats pills!

Thank you all. Lets see if anyone has a similar experience with Metro. It's truly vile stuff. If I pill my guy today, he will run from me for the rest of the week. The only way to get him would be when he is sleeping. Then he would be afraid of sleeping in public and crawl under the bed etc. Terrible.

I treated both my cats for giardia a month after I got Simba. I tried the pill pockets which worked for a day or two. Eventually I ground up the pill and mixed it with the gavy from the food. You Can also buy gravy at pet stores. You can also try mixing with gerber baby food (meat flavore) which my cats love love love. Good luck!

As MyBabiesDaddy said, crush the pill and either sprinkle on top of their food or mix it in. The only problem with mixing it, is they don't eat all of their food then the pill is wasted. If you are speaking of Metronidazole, it comes in liquid format (not sure if you were referring to this being the pill you were giving). It is hard to give because as mentioned, it's horrible tasting stuff. I have read that to take care of bloat in fish/frogs/toads they use a combination of metronidazole and krill. Not only did the toad, of the person I was talking to, devour it but when it was sitting on the kitchen table his cat was trying to tear open the package to eat it. So, if you have good eaters that aren't picky on the foods they like, you can get your metronidazole and mix it with some fish/shrimp, etc and see if they will take it like that. One of the big things is to try to change it up, just when they realize what you are doing, they get a new and different treat! :) The other thing is fastidious cleaning of kitty pans, floors and furniture so they don't keep re-infecting themselves. Good luck! :)

"crush the pill and either sprinkle on top of their food or mix it in. The only problem with mixing it, is they don't eat all of their food then the pill is wasted."

If I starve them (ie: no dry food, and ONLY medicated food), the results are not good. I think its due to the fact that crushing the pill allows them to get absorbed much quickly. Maybe if I fed them 4 per day using this method it would work.

Does anyone have a good source for Metronidazole online?

Amazon is where I always buy my Panacur. Have they been tested for Giardia or is it a best guestimate from previous experience? Have you tried a probiotic? I used Intelliflora with my babies and it worked like a charm to firm up their stools after having diarrhea for 4 months and every other treatment and probiotic failed to help.

I'm sorry I should have added more detail. They were once diagnosed with Giardia about 8 months ago. Amazon only seems to have Panacur for dogs and i'm worried its not the right stuff. I've tried probiotics (Holistic Select) and several rounds of food changes. No luck. The poo is just soft, no other ill symptoms. I will go to the vet if this doesnt work. I just don't have $300 to treat both cats again.

The "for dogs" stuff is the right stuff. The FDA hasn't approved it's use for cats in the states for whatever reason but it's what I always order and give my babies. Vets suggest it as an extra label. It is the right stuff. I just order the right packets with the correct amounts for my varying weight kitties and give it to them as usual.
