I have a 12 year old Siamese who's losing weight. He's been to 2 different vets for lab profiles and everything is within normal limits. He had a dental about a month ago and needed some extractions - the vet told me that he would feel alot better after the problems in his mouth were fixed and should start eating normally again. Unfortunately, no. He's been to the vet several times in the last months for weight checks. Today he weighs 9.25 lbs and I can tell he's lost weight over the last several months.

His eating is hit and miss. I feed him small amounts of moist over the daytime and there are times when he doesn't eat all of it. Right now, he's sitting next to my chair and in the past that's signaled that he wants something to eat, but if I get up now to feed him, more than likely he won't eat.

I'll add that last year I lost 2 pets within 6 weeks of each other between October and December. It's my understanding that the pets left behind can grieve for up to 6 months. One of the signs is hiding alot more, which he does now. Not sure that's what could be going on?

I think I need to start him on a higher quality senior food. Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Thank you so much for your reply, information, and suggestions. Nikki is one of two cats that I trapped at my workplace before retiring in 2011. At that time, he was approx. 4 months old. Because he wasn't handled and socialized as a young kitten, he still has some feral in him. In addition to him, I also have 2 more cats, one being his half-sister and also trapped, about a year earlier than Nikki, she being somewhat feral as well. Bringing another cat into the mix isn't something that'll work. None of my 3 socialize with each other.....my 3rd cat, Grayson, is the youngest at almost 9 and if truth be told I never should've brought him home when I saw him sitting on the side of the road as a kitten. Not that I would have left him there, but I should have very diligently tried to find a home for him. He's extremely alpha and devils the other 2 cats. I'm sure that probably has a negative impact on them. Beauty wouldn't stand for his behavior but the other 2 run from him.

At this time, Nikki's eating Fancy Feast canned and I also bought some Purina Senior for Cats, which he eats. Although his amount of eating is not at the level which I'd like to see it, he seems to like it so that's a good thing. He also gets Temptations Treats in MixUp seafood flavors, which he REALLY likes. Previously, he ate Friskies Indoor Delights and Purina One Healthy Maturity, neither of which he'll eat now. I've tried him on the Friskies Little Gravies and he won't eat it. I've also tried him on a couple more Friskies dry foods and he won't eat them either.

Before I lost my Beauty cat on 12/07/20, I did happen to see and get a short video of her and Nikki eating from the same bowl at the same time. I'd never known that to happen before that. So maybe he is grieving her loss. It won't be 6 months until the first week in June. I'm monitoring him and praying that his appetite turns around.

The last 2 times he's seen the vet, vet says all good with his weight/appearance but I think he looks a little puny. I have pictures of him from before Beauty died and he was more filled in than now. Maybe he was overweight and I'm concerning myself for nothing?

What are food puzzles?

Thanks again!

Nikki doesn't really play with toys. I haven't tried a laser pointer with him but I do have what I call roly balls with bells in them. He will play with them for a few seconds and then walk away from them. I did buy a cat toy at Aldi's that had like a circular descending 3 tiered slide with a ball in each tier to bat around inside. All 3 cats were scared of it so I took it back to Aldi's for refund.
