As I was coming down to the kitchen this morning, I hear Gazoo jump down off the counter and then saw him licking his lips. I knew he had eaten something. I looked around and realized he had broken into the bag of fig newtons we accidentally left on the counter and had eaten the corners off of 5 of them. In total I'd say he ate the equivalent of one full newton.

Anyone know if this is bad for him? He's not showing any ill effects but it has only been about half an hour.

Figs are something to be concerned about, but I don't know just how toxic they are. I'd give the vet a call when they open. I would expect some diarrhea at minimum.

A quick Google search gave me conflicting information on whether or not figs are toxic to cats.

A few webpages said they are, and others say they aren't. I also found a thread posted in 2007 by someone whose cat ate Fig Newtons, and she posted 24 hours later saying that the cat had had no ill effects.

Try and find an emergency vet in your area and call them - you don't need to rush Gazoo there, but just ask if someone can tell you whether or not you should be concerned.
