I was wondering if cats prey on insects? And if so, what kinds of insects? Thnx!! :D (not counting the fleas they get when they eat mice) 8)

Assumpta likes to hunt moths, and will occasionally eat them or bring them to us as a gift.

Also, we had an infestation of Katydids last summer, and she wouldn't go near them, but she would find them and go into a low crouch (like an old-fashioned bird-pointing dog) and hold it until we came and disposed of the bug for her...if the bug moved to another place, she would follow it and resume the crouch position.

She's a strange cat...

Unfortunately, we've been brought some ROACHES by our boys. They'll come over and prop their little paws up on the couch like, "Look Mom, Look Dad! I brought you something!" Usually it's just a milk ring, a hair tie, or one of their many toys. But then, sometimes (as we usually bug-spray pretty well), we end up jumping up and squirming all over the place because we've realized that we've been given a nasty, yucky, disgusting roach.

BUT!! We still praise the boys for bringing them. Even though it's absolutely revolting to us, the little fellas are just trying to show us what they caught for us. So, they get some love for that!

They also chase everything from lizards on the window screens to the TINIEST fly they might hear buzzing around their heads. :D

My aunts cats will catch little lizards, sometimes all they will bring you is the tail. It will still be moving and they drop it in your lap and just stare at you. I try very hard to praise them, but sometimes it is hard to when you have lizard tail squirming around in your hand.

lilly used to catch and eat hornets in the summer that got inside. she'd sit in the windows while the hornets buzzed around trying to get out and would bat at them with her paw and when she finally knocked them down to the windowsill, she'd eat them. same with flies and moths, and she hunts grasshoppers sometimes too.

Thanks all for your responses. I thought they did, but didn't know for sure, as mine haven't ever been out since I adopted them. I was wondering about their fascintation for the Cat Dancer, and was speculating that it was because it resembled an insect. Maybe that's not too far-fetched, indeed. 8)

in the town where I used to live there were two very untame (I think strays) frightened black cats and I used to bring them crickets to eat and play with in the summer! They were a big hit, and the cat's became quite tame and let me pet them and even hold them! :) S I think cats like crickets!

Daizy loves to hunt bugs..... she makes really funny sounds while hunting them..almost sounds like she is barking in a sense. Her favorite thing to do now is chase the spiders that are sneaking in the house, acting funny and barking and watching me scream for my husband to come and kill it. I have severe archnaphobia (sp?) and usually have to leave the room until I know its dead. back to daizy- she loves to play with ladybugs too....silly kittie!!!!!

Bugs aren't the only thing they'll catch.

Many years ago I was throwing out old cardboard boxes in the basement.
One looked empty except for what appeared to be a crooked stick on the bottom (I wasn't wearing my glasses at the time). I picked it up & looked
at it closer. It DID look and feel like a stick until I saw two eyes on the end of that stick. Yep, it was a petrified garden snake!

One night watching TV I heard something squeal from the bathroom. Denzel caught a little lizard, mustve come inside from somewhere.

He was chasing it around and every time he grabbed it in his mouth, the lizard let out a tiny squeal.

He also sits at the window and tries to catch flies on the other side of the window.

They squeal?!?! I am glad I have never heard that.

Willow likes Daddy long legs - she plays with them for a while before dismantling and eating them bit by bit.... gross!

Sasha tried a beetle once but after sucking on it for a while (bless the little girl - she has no teeth) spat it out on the carpet and walked away in disgust

The Herd loves "outside treats" Spike takes them "hopper hunting" They catch huge grasshoppers and they do eat them. GROSS! Just the body they leave the head and legs. They also have gotten all other assorted creatures. I generally try to take everything away from them, or avoid the capture all together. I think Spike tends to let them do whatever they want with what they catch. I know that it is their nature, but I think of cats like humans. If you have to kill something because you are hungry, that is ok, but do not kill for sport.

All 4 of my cats like to "hunt" bugs-- mostly spiders and flies. Occasionally they'll eat them (ick! Protein I guess...). It's natural for cats to stalk and hunt moving things-- I rather it be creepy spiders than little birdies that K2 and Abyss bring home...

My Kilala is an inside cat but he still catches EVERYTHING buggy and brings it to me then eats it in front of me and starts to meow for my approval. It's amazing how attentive he is watching the flys in the summer. We have VERY high ceilings in our condo and he'll just hunt it for hours waiting for it to come down. He also knows if it's been to long he comes to my mom and meows and runs back and forth till she notices the fly and sprays it for him then he goes after it again.
