Ginza has a FLUTD - *Update-YAY!!*

Haven't been too active, but I am trying to keep up on posts. It's been mad-crazy here, and I've been dealing with Ginza's FLUTD for a week now, so no time for anything else. He is SUCH a darling little trooper. He was so well-behaved even when they were poking him with needles and giving the ultrasound.

I noticed Ginza licking himself right after using the bathroom a couple times on Friday and Saturday. The pee was a good size, but I thought I'd make an appt on Monday just in case. Sunday morning he peed in dribbles, in front of me, in the bathroom (he's soooo smart!). So off we rushed to the ER. He was inflamed, and we got subcu, anti-inflam, and Clavamox.

He had his appt with our regular vet today, and I told her he didn't seem to be better, although he didn't dribble any more. The sample she took contained blood, bacteria and crystals, which she showed me under the microscope. He's now on Baytril, and we'll use the prescription food (s/d & Purina). We'll see how that works, and I'm doing more research on it. I'd like to know others' opinions on them. I'll look thru the older posts too, and thanks in advance for any thread links since I know others are also dealing with it.

We discussed the various causes, mainly dietary. I tried to figure out what was different, because we've been going good for a few years now. I've only changed 2 things over the last 2 months: added Science Diet into the rotation, and given them lots of extra commercial treats to make up for not being home as much lately. I can't say if those were the cause, because the ash and mag content seem on par. (The treats had no numbers.) To be on the safe side, I'm cutting both out, as well as all seafood, and re-examining the rotation.

Back to the vet in 2 weeks. So now we just wait, and keep our fingers crossed he recovers completely without recurrences.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this! I was wondering where you'd been, Superkitties.

Does Ginza eat the prescription food? That was my biggest problem with Science Diet. Snickers was on k/d for a very short time because he hated it. When I returned the remaining cans, the vet tech wasn't one bit surprised. She said that many cats don't like the taste.

Do let us know how he's doing when you have time.

Thank you guys. :) Same as before, he's still in bathroom prison. He's still going multiple times. So far no blockage, but I'm freaking scared, especially when his poor wee-wee pops right out. Thankfully, he's eating the prescription canned - in fact I'm feeding it to all of them, just in case (vet ok'd). Hills c/d and Purina UR. I'll ask tomorrow about Waltham's SO, thanks!

It'll take a while for it to run its course, while I figure out what I need to change in his diet to keep the urine in the right balance. When the struvites go, the inflammation resolves, but we don't want to acidify him to the other extreme of oxalates either. Hubby is getting a pH meter for me tomorrow.

How big is a "good size" urine clump to you? My little boy has this right now and I'm freaking out too. We took him to the emergency vet Fri night. He had a mostly blocked urethra. Blah blah blah...

Now I keep watching him. He looks completely miserable. I tried giving him other canned food and he'll only lick the sauce. :? I haven't seen him drink anything other than that. Every ten minutes he's in the litter box, and a bit comes out - It's a little clump the size of a tablespoon. I'm going to try to get him into a vet hospital tomorrow, but want to make sure it's not an emergency now.

Oh man, Pipers'M *hug*.

A good sized clump in our household measures about 3-4 inches by 2-3 inches across, often bigger. This would differ in other households with different diets, water consumption and litter brand.

Ginza was making 6-8 little teaspoon-sized clumps when it was bad, and he's not quite doing it tonight, so I'm very encouraged. Less clumps and about 2" x 2". You can breathe easier as long as he's still dribbling. I'm syringing water so he'll have enough to keep passing all the crap out.

I think we have progress. Over 2 hours, he only went twice, somewhat streaming, and not straining for minutes like he was doing several days ago. Yippee!!

However, the pees are still small, tablespoon-size - slightly bigger, and he licks himself immediately afterwards for a minute, so he's still uncomfortable. Only a couple extra random times he would lick himself, versus every 2-3 minutes.

Piper'sM, how's your boy? Re: syringe, I fill a big one with water, then squirt it to the side of his mouth or right in front if I can. He was cooperative until today, when he put his paw down and refused to swallow any more - it just flowed all onto my shirt. So I bought some organic free-range chicken broth that only has 4 ingredients in it, and trying that tack.

OH! Chicken broth is an EXCELLENT IDEA!!!! I'm trying to get my boy to drink -- little success. After fighting over meds yesterday morning (and boy do I have the scratches to prove it!) my Boo has been very mad at me. No cuddles at all last night. 8O

I'll try the chicken broth with no garlic/onions and see if that works!! You're brilliant!

Oh, I dunno if the chicken broth worked for you? Ginza wouldn't drink it straight, but liked it in his food, he licked it all off. Just water would've work in that case, but I liked thinking that the added flavor was appealing.

True, in general garlic and onions aren't good. In tiny amounts, it's probably negligable, so I'm not worried. Mine has onion powder, but no garlic.

Awwww, any cuddles from Boo tonight?

Sorry, I'm in S. Florida and the power/internet/water is intermittent! Internet went out yesterday again, just came on now!

I took Boo to the vet yesterday b/c I was really worried still. They said he still has a moderate amt of blood in his urine, but he's not clogged! Today he's doing A LOT better. He actually loves the c/d diet (yay!). I didn't expect them b/c he was so mad about the vet, but I got cuddles all night!

That is great that Boo liked the food! That's half the battle, getting them to eat it. Ginza's not happy about the food, but he's a trooper - he eats it.

Week two of the infection, and we're still hanging in there. He's madder than heck at me, with the crummy food, meds, forced water, and forced imprisonment. The pees are still small, but he's going in the box. I haven't bought a pH meter yet, but I'll try the pH strips hubby got as soon as I can catch him in a pee.

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!! I am giddy with joy and relief. We got back from the vet's this morning, and he has a clean bill of health! She took a direct sample from him, and no protein, no blood, no crystals! His pH is 6.5. He'll have to stay on the special diet, but I want to mix in regular foods at some point. That will mean having to monitor his pH balance regularly. I've been syringing him extra water regularly to make sure he drinks enough, and I think this will be a life-long thing I do for all of them.

I wanted to thank Meowmie specially for responding to my PM request to repeat some of the food replies from other threads so I didn't have to search for them. I found the info very helpful, and a good leaping point for some of my research.
