Hi folks,

My wife and I have had many cats throughout our lives, but none in the last few years. We recently got a cat from our local shelter:

Midnight. 8 year old boy. Was previously owned by an elderly woman who became too ill to care for him.

He's the sweetest kitty I've known.. well house trained .... loves being pet.. .. only problem, which is becoming worse, is lots of meowing during the night/early morning which is starting to drive us a little crazy. We think he wants outside.... but I'll post about this in a separate thread for discussion.

He's a stunner! I'm so glad he found a loving home. It's so difficult to rehome the oldies, everyone seems to want kittens.

But he's absolutely gorgeous. And a nice new addition to the forum for black cat appreciation day!!

He might just be lonely at night. Squee used to do the same thing till we started letting her sleep with us (actually, we didn't have a choice, it was either that or listen to her kamakaziing the door at night) she's better now.

THANK YOU for the double blessing you gave this kitty! First he is a senior, which 95% of adopters reject, second he is black. Another black mark - excuse the pun. You were fortunate to find each other! He may just be missing his home and his previous momma. He will settle down - it may take a few weeks. Try to have patience and ignore it. If he can't sleep with you for whatever reason, buy a fan for the BR and turn it on high to mask the meows. You could also block him into another part of the house for the evening. At 8 years old he may be used to snuggling with someone (human) all night. Please don't let him out - even if he wants it. There are just too many dangers out there.

Congratulations! Very handsome cat.

I've found that the cats at our shelter who come from situations similar to the one you described usually make very good adoption cats because they just know how to be loved.

If you figure out the meowing thing, let me know. I have two night meowers. With Nala (9 yo), it's a little easier. She's usually trying to interact with the nightlife outside the window, so I just close the blinds, that helps her. But with Penny (11 yo), the meows are inexplicable to me. I will go downstairs to see what the caterwauling is about and she'll just look at me like everything's normal - no agitation, no bug she's hunting, no food dish she's hovering around.

Thank YOU for adopting a senior black kitty! What a miracle this cat received getting such a great home with people who care for him! I hope you get some good answers to your cat meowing problems. but I am hoping that it is something that'll calm down once he settles in. I echo everything Marcia wrote - please don't let him out. And thank you so much for adopting a black kitty and a senior kitty all in one! His chances of adoption were probably very slim with those two things on his rap sheet. ;)

Yay for all of you, congrats !
