I have found mostly pork kidneys, so I just leave the white bit on. most of the cats will eat it, but Torri won't.

I got lucky and found spleen this week! New organs for the kitties, yay!

 

Congrats! I had a hard time finding kidneys at first as well. Luckily they last a decent amount of time.

I believe the white stuff is fat, but perhaps some other tissue. It should be fine to feed but remember that it is not organ so should not be considered as part of the 5% kidney you need to feed.

 

...Welllll... lo and behold, as we went into the shrink-wrapped fresh meat section, KIDNEYS!!

...(and boy, do they stink!). Does anyone know what the hard, white material is in the center of the kindeys? I imagine it is connective tissue and such, so I figure it is alright to feed?

I also got my kitchen scale from Santa :luv so now I can get used to portion sizes and begin to feel even better about what I'm feeding!-BP

Yep, that's where I find mine, too. If you can, ask them when the shipments usually come in so you can get them fresh, and before they're gone.

Yep, again. I've found nothing, NOTHING since starting my cats on raw that stinks as bad as kidneys do. *gag*

That white stuff is fat. I cut as much off as I can without being obsessive about it.

 

I had been feeding lamb kidney and was so excited to have found it!

I found beef kidney at Safeway a few weeks ago - I now get that instead. Mainly because it is much cheaper from there!

Wierd, I've have never even smelled kidney when I am cutting it up. Too many years of working on a farm??? I don't even really smell when they are spreading manure anymore in the fields....apparently that really smells. I can smell other stuff though :lol:

I also saw tripe while I was home... strange looking organ! I can start another thread, but does anyone who might stumble across this thread have some good information about tripe? If I remember correctly there are different types, and certain ones are very beneficial?

ET just finished his raw dinner... worked his way through a very thick gizzard, and now he is quite satisfied with himself :luv

 

Yeah, I have a HARD time cutting up kidney. I get past this by freezing them and then thawing them about halfway-- this makes them soft enough to cut easily into smaller portions for freezing, but they aren't all slimy and they don't smell much.
