Meet Katy-Did, my 7-8yr old cat. I've had her since she was about 8wks old.
This will be a long story but I want to share all the details of my plight. Katie has never been sick before. Yesterday, at 5am, I fed all 4 their usual breakfast of Fancy Feast. Katy ate normally. She doesn't eat all that much...prefers the juiciest part. About 30 min after eating, I heard her vomiting (something she very, very rarely does). She vomited 5 times in a row, copious (much more than she had just eaten) amounts of totally undigested food....looked just like it had in the bowl before she ate it. I suspect it included more than just breakfast. In the next 4 hours she tried to vomit 4-5 more times but only brought up white spit. She also went to the litter box 5 times and strained to poop with NO results. Okay, now I'm thinking obstruction and it's Sunday, so off we went to the Emergency Vet clinic.
Luckily I got a very kind and concerned doc. She suggested blood work and x-rays. Since Katy's vital signs were all normal, I asked that she do the x-ray first. She came back and told me that Katy was completely packed with fecal matter from top to bottom. She ordered an enema. Katy passed what I would consider a normal formed stool. The doc was surprised at how impacted her x-ray looked because Katy was so young and healthy looking. Well, I packed her up again and brought her home thinking that the problem would be resolved with a few more poops. She had a moderate sized liquid stool when she got home....normal color, no blood. Then she went to her favorite sleeping spot and stayed there the rest of the day. I thought, okay, she was stressed out. She would not eat any supper. She only moved from on spot to the other a few times, and just laid there. She is a talker and has an opinion about everything, so I expected her to bless me out....but she hardly made a sound. Just a weak meow. From last evening until about 11am, she had 3 more liquid stools, each about a tablespoon.....normal color, no blood. She would drink a bit of water....but no food....and I'm pretty sure she tried to vomit 2-3 more times during the night because I saw little spots of spit. I honestly thought she would be fine after 24hrs, but not so. She was weak and pitiful....and she is scaring me to death. I'm about physically sick over this and her sister and brothers know something is wrong too.. Instead of sleeping with me, they stayed by her all night.
Of course I called my vet and, even as I type, she is at the clinic. He is going to take a follow-up x-ray to see what her bowel looks like now, he is going to draw a really complete blood panel, give the something for nausea and "sleuth around". The blood work won't be back until tomorrow so I don't know if she'll come home today or not. Probably not.
What would cause her bowel to become suddenly paralyzed? Have any of you had any experience with this? I am tearing up just because I am so scared.

I'm so sorry to read about Katy-Did's constipation. Unfortunately, this is the second such scenario we've heard about here on the forum lately. The other is in the following thread:

http://www.catforum.com/forum/38-health-nutrition/209258-foster-constipated-extreme-help.html

It sounds, though, like you caught Katy's problem early enough to make treatment more effective for her. She responded to the first enema, but she may need repeated enemas to get the rest of her intestinal tract cleaned out. Did the vet administer fluids, as well? If not, that's something that she would definitely benefit from. Also, did the vet prescribe a lubricant laxative like Laxatone, Cat Lax, or other hairball remedy to help lubricate her GI tract so that she can pass the constipated stool more easily?

Please keep us updated on her condition.

Just brought Katy-Did home for the night. My vet called and said that he thought she would be better at home....though, with the understanding that he is sending a possibly sick cat home. She was so stressed there that I told him I fully understood. Blood work comes in tomorrow. The follow-up x-rays times 2 showed that her intestinal tract looked better. He gave her fluids and anti-nausea medicine. When I got her home I had to give her a bath because her rear and tail were disgusting and she wouldn't groom herself. She actually seemed to enjoy the bath! Then dinner was served and she ate her food and some of her sister's. So far, no vomiting. I am happy and relieved but the bad news is that in the x-rays both yesterday and today, it appears that her heart is enlarged. Cardio-myopathy. Probably will have to go for an ultrasound soon. He said that could cause the vomiting for sure. He'll know more when the blood work results are in....or not!
I asked him to tell me honestly what the cardio-myopathy would mean. He said...honestly....he could line up 5 Katy's with the exact same problem and some would be able to be managed on medication.....some wouldn't. That's the bottom line. Kitty prayers, please! I love her so much! She is talking more tonight.

So sorry to hear about Katy-did...
Sure hope there's some good news soon...
At least if there's a concrete diagnosis, you'll know better how to treat...
Prayers and Hugs.

I'm very glad to hear that Katy-Did's constipation seems to have been cleared and that she has an appetite. Those are both very good things! I am sorry, however, for the enlarged heart. There is a very active Yahoo mailing list for caretakers of cats with heart issues. I strongly recommend you join the list. They can provide you with extensive information about your cat's condition and various treatment options, and they can answer any questions you may have. They're also a terrific source of support. Here's the link:

i'm glad the constipation issue is partially resolved, and sorry to hear she has cardiomyopathy. did your vet tell you what kind it is? there are several types, and that probably dictates the kind of treatment.

the good part is that at least you're aware of the heart condition because a lot of times cats have it and show so few symptoms that no one knows until it's too late. positive thoughts. :)

It's amazing how a sick furball can tie your heart up in knots. Thanks to everyone for the prayers and encouragement. Haven't gotten the blood test results yet....guess the vet was tied up all day. Only positive thought is that if he got the results (they were sent out to another lab) and there was something horrible, he would have gotten a message to me. Thanks for the link re: heart diseases. I won't know details until after the visit to the cardiologist and the ultrasound. Katy has eaten and kept her food down today and is talking to me as usual. Haven't seen her use the litter box.....hope she went and I just didn't see her go. Cats are special, according to both vets this week....dogs are a piece of cake to diagnose and treat. If they have a problem the symptoms can be checked off on a list....not so with cats. Cats don't exhibit the same symptoms for a disease....they all seem to be different. Wonder what's up with that? Are cats just more stoic about hiding their problems so one day they seem fine and the next they are deathly ill?
