Is all seafood bad or only fish?

Hi all,

Just started feeding my 2 Ziwipeak moist cat food. But it just clicked now that there is one seafood ingredient in there (Beef, Lamb and Venison flavors). That ingredient is, New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel.
From what I have read of this, it seems good to feed to them but I have read that seafood is not really good for cats because of the high mercury in there??

Not sure if I should continue with this brand. It does seem good a part from that ingredient and Rocket hasn't vomited since eating it.

Hi BurmBlue,
My understanding, is the Green-Lipped Mussel, is indeed safe and very healthy! I was just reading about this somewhere! Maybe I even bookmarked it! If so, I'll add the link here!:)

Basic rule on fish, the smaller the fish, the safer, as the bigger fish start eating the smaller fish, this is when you start to really see the toxin levels going up!

So fish as an occasional 'treat' isn't bad, but a steady diet of it can lead to all kinds of health issues, as well as getting a very picky cat, that may have an almost impossible time changing to something else, flavor wise...

Sardines, are fed by some of our members here, as a weekly treat...

Never feed human tuna, as a steady diet, it is lacking in a specific nutrient, that causes severe deficiencies for the cat (sorry! Late night, brain dump!).

I'm sure other's will have some good food advice for you!

There are two reasons for avoiding fish cat foods. One is mercury the other is ash.

You can reduce mercury by choosing foods using smaller fish...kawakawa tuna instead of albacore tuna for example.

Most pet food companies (especially the ones that make low quality foods) use whole ground fish in their products. This means there is a high bone content, which creates more ash. Too much ash may contribute to or create urinary issues.

Shellfish are all small and don't contain bones, so no problem. Weruva fillets their fish (except for the flavors that contain chunks of whole fish like sardines). They have a flavor called Kawa Booty which is just shredded kawakawa tuna in gravy...small fish, no bones. If you need/want to feed fish this is one of the best choices.

Thanks all for your answers. I'll rephrase what I was asking though. I don't want to feed fish or seafood at all. But when I saw the ingredient in here it worried me a bit as I am trying to avoid all seafood.
But if this is a good ingredient and I shouldn't worry then I will stick with it.

Thanks again.
