Kitty's Watery Eye (Annoyed with Vets)

I love my vet. They're real close to my home (short car rides with Kitty), very nice office, nice staff, and seemingly helpful vets.

I've been bringing Kitty in since January, trying to find out why her one eye is watering. This is how it went:

Trip 1 in Jan '04: Vet looked at the white in Kitty's eye and prescribed an ointment to put in

Trip 2 in Feb: Vet looked at the white in her eye and said it seemed better and it was probably allergies

Trip 3 in March: Vet again looked at the white in Kitty's eye and decided that her tear duct might be blocked and they could try to flush it out next time they put Kitty under (for a dental or something).

Well, all these months later, she still has a watery eye. I took her in one last time, and we got a new Vet. Well, let me tell you, this one was SOOO much better. She looked at the white in Kitty's eye, looked in her eye with the stethescope, and then she stained Kitty's eyes and we looked at them under black light. Sure enough, it was clear as day that her one tear duct was blocked. The other vet told me that they wouldn't know if it was blocked until they put her under and looked at it!!!! Either way, I guess I'll be asking for that Vet next time!

Funny side note, the Vet's name is Ann Valenti. My mom's name is Valentine Ann

When my Scotty's eyes were watery, one vet told me he probably had allergies. I figured that was fine. Then his eyes were discharging green goop (much like a human might have) and that's when I took him to a different vet. She did the stain as well and found that one of his eyes had a tiny scratch on it. =o(

I put the ointment on his eyes and my goodness! He's so much better now.

As for the name: that is tooo weird. :D

I am having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM with my cat. Maleke's left eye waters. First the vet put him on antibiotics, then he put him on eye drops, then eye ointment, then antibiotics again for 4 weeks. NOTHING worked and I have stopped bringing him to the vet about it. He is acting totally normal other than his eye watering. He doens't seem in any pain, and it's not red.

I don't know whether to blame my vet or the fact that a cat with a watery eye is really hard to diagnos because it could be a lot of things. My vet did the stain in the eye thing too, but found nothing abnormal.

The first vet perscribed the problem correctly (blocked tear duct) and any investigations around a cats eyes should be done while the cat is under considering how delicate the eye is and how cats scwirm around.

Did the vet end up putting the cat under to clear out the duct? How was it unblocked?

The first time at the vet they thought it was an infection, they thought the same thing at the second visit. The third vet thought it might be a blocked tear duct, but said they couldn't tell unless she was put under.

The last vet actually looked in kitties eyes with one of those lighted scopes, and did the staining...which proved that her tear duct was blocked! Now that I know what it is and that it isn't threatening her eyesight, I can relax and she can get it flushed next time she is put under.
