Meowing cat when being picked up

I have a boy cat named Mister. He weighs 13 pounds, but he's not fat, he's just a big cat with lots of muscles. Since he was a baby, whenever I would pick him up he would meow. It doesn't sound like he is in pain, he just does a single meow. I pick him up by putting one hand behind his front legs and the other hand on his butt, so he shouldn't be uncomfortable. Now that he is getting bigger he is harder to pick up and does a louder meow and sometimes squeaks. He is VERY vocal all the time, so I don't think its a problem....but what is he trying to say? Does anyone have a cat that does this?

Thanks!

My cat does that too. He wants things on his terms. If i pick him up he wont stay he will jump down. He only gets in my lap how he wants when he wants then hes comfortable. He will jump in my lap if i pat my legs (asking for his attention) but he wont if i force it on him.

He likes to think about it, he wants to check all his options first. He will simetimes stand up and look in my lap first and sniff around.

I don't know if he wants to be picked up or not. My cat loves being held(he was bottle fed) and loves the attention. If you bend down to pick him up, he puts his front paws in the air so you can get him easier and also gives that single meow. Then he procedes to cuddle, pur, kneed, and lick your shoulder. It is also the same meow as when if we call him and he's upstairs but too lazy to come down, he looks off the overhang and moews. I think it's a "I'm here, come and get me" meow. He's also a big guy at just under 10 lbs and only about 6 months old, wonder how big he'll get!

I love talking to my cats! My wife calls me Dr Doolittle! One is more vocal than the other two, but when it's supper time we all get quite the conversation going. My first cat was very vocal, too, and really got me started in talking to my cats. I think we'll never know their real intentions, but I know when mine are hungry! But sometimes I think they just like talking to me! It's crazy!
