Hey all, some of you may remember my pseudonym from posts about a pair of Siamese cats. Those guys fell through, but I eventually found another - meet Jiva, AKA Diva. I believe she's about a year old. I got her from a woman who rescued her last winter but could not continue to keep her. She's gorgeous and incredibly easygoing. When my friend and I arrived to meet her she came right up to nuzzle and inspect. We brought her home and she seemed to relax within just a few hours. Unfortunately, for the last two nights, she has had me awake from 6am and 4am on... She bats my face or gives me full body nuzzle from head to toe. It's very cute, but it's driving me nuts. I tried putting her out of my room, but she meowed for ten minutes. I made the mistake of rewarding her undesirable behavior and let her back in, granting me a few minutes of peace.
Now I've read through some of the other threads on this, and I know that many of you are of the opinion that this isn't a problem and this means it's time to give your cat attention, but I've been a zombie for the past two days at work. I want to give her love and attention but the wee hours are not the time.
So my plan is more or less two-fold:
1. Get her more tired before bed. I've had a surprisingly hard time engaging her in play. She's not very tempted by the fake mousie on a string, small balls, corks, etc.. I'm going to try a laser pointer tonight and see if that helps. I've also read that a little snack of some wet food before bed can help fall asleep, but I'm not sure if it will keep her asleep. Any ideas?
2. Try a little punishment/reward. I figured that when she starts pawing my face, I can give her a stern no, not engage in any play, and dump her onto the floor, or outside of the room and just not let her in, no matter how much she meows. This will hopefully give her the idea that if she relaxes, she's more than welcome in bed, but if she's troublesome, she's out. Or I can just ignore her efforts and she will get the message, but she makes ignoring her very difficult.
Ideally, I could train her so that she starts poking and nuzzling when she hears my alarm music come on. That would be incredible.
Any ideas? Solid plan? Do I have it all wrong?
Sorry for the extra long post and thanks!
