I just adopted a little black rescue Persian. He is somewhere around 3-5 years old best guesstimate. Probably normal weight should be in the 10-12 pound range?

He was found literally starving, left in an abandoned house. He weighed 3 pounds when his rescue got him out. I adopted him at 7 pounds. He feels like petting a skeleton with fur.

I feed my cats a high quality, human grade, grain free diet (Weruva). Little Plush won't eat it. So I've bought him Iams and other middle grade foods that are better than grocery but not super premium. Tonight he had a can of Iams purrfect delicacies and half a can of Blue wilderness kitten (ok, that one is super premium) and he picked at the Weruva salmon.

I put out Earthborn grain free low carb kibble but he doesn't really bother with it (I have a kibble addict also that I'm trying to transition to canned), I've sprinkled stella and chewy's nuggets on it. He might eat one. My little S&C addict will get the others. I've tried a couple brands of raw - my weegies think they're in heaven but Plush won't touch it.

How else can I make sure Plush is eating enough and getting enough to gain - he need like 5 pounds I would say. How much should he be eating? I isolate him at meal times, but other than the kibble leaving food out is pointless, what he doesn't finish the others will get while I'm at work.

Until he picks up another pound or two, I recommend you keep him separated from your other cats while you're at work so that he can have access to free choice canned food. You can still give him visual access to your other animals so that he doesn't feel so isolated by filling the doorway of his room from floor to ceiling with baby gates. His gut may not be capable of processing more than small amounts of food at a time, so it's important that he has access to food all day so he can graze.

Good for you adopting a boy with special needs ... for the time being. Hopefully he will continue his recovery and flourish under your care for many years to come.

Kitten food has a lot more calories than regular cat food so maybe feeding it to him at all meals will help. Also, maybe boiled chicken if he likes it. You could try some calorie supplement from the pet store. It is la bell that you can either put in his food, let him lick it from your hand or use a syringe if you need to. I hope the little guys gets plump soon!

I think you are my new hero for adopting this poor fellow. Take it slow, he's gone from nothing much and probably cheap garbage at that to top shelf food he is not used to. He will need to acquire a taste for new things. You could also try supplementing his food with Nutrical. It's a high calorie nutrient supplement in gel form that you place on their paw to lick off. It tastes good and most cats like it.

Kitten food is a good choice. I know Fancy Feast makes a good quality kitten food that cats love. It's not top shelf but will do for the time being if he finds the taste agreeable.

As to plumpness. I spent a year trying to fatten Lacey Mae up. She is just normally a thin, slight girl, and a very picky eater at at hat. This may be the basic constitution of this fellow too. Thanks for saving him.

Gotta love those owners that move and leave their animals to die of starvation!!!!!! Idiots!

Thank you for adopting this lil fellow...would love to see a pic! Persians are gorgeous! Give him time...his lil belly isn't used to eating a lot...but I would always have food out for him so he can graze whenever he feels like. Marshall was very thin when I got him....now...well let's just say I call him tubby for short ;)

Aw, thank you for adopting that sweet kitty!
I want to say that our adopted ragdoll was underweight, and it turns out he had parasites. Even shelters may miss things from time to time, so it may be worth looking into for your kitty!
Good luck- it's taken months, but Skye has filled out, and no longer feels like a bag of bones.

He's been dewormed once I know. He's going to the vet in a week, I'll have him checked again. The biggest reason he's underweight is that he was legit starving, someone abandoned him and another cat in a house and left them there with nothing! :cussing

Poor baby. He's got another chance now (that's the name of his rescue too.) And my family is dedicated to his well being!

He's getting kitten food - and an extra meal or two with his brothers shut out of the room. He pretty much gets whatever he wants (including the butter off my toast today lol)
