Odor Control Products?

Hey Guys. I need some help controlling odor in my apartment.

I live in a very small apartment that consists of two 12x12 rooms and a 4x10 hallway that leads to the door). The litterbox sits in enclosed "furniture" cover and lives in the hallway (where there is poor air circulation and no windows). The windows in the house are rarely opened due to AC/heat in the summer/winter.

Sometimes when I wake up, or when I come home from work i'm hit with a slight funk in the hallway.

Now that I've added another cat (and another litter box) - the odor is more present. The issues I face are:

1) Sometimes the cats dont cover their poo.
2) Sometimes the cats urinate on the litter box wall/corners (bypassing the litter!)
3) Two litter pans kick up additional dust.
4) The new cat introduces more "hair''/dander to the apartment.

Are there any products that can help around $100?

I'm doing the best I can by feeding grain-free high quality and raw food and using Everclean ES litter (Tidy Cats multicat didnt cut it!). Litter pans are scooped 2-3x per day, cleaned weekly, and apt floors cleaned every 2 days.

Im lookin at the following products but cant find a good comparison of the two

Amazon.com: Hamilton Beach TrueAir Compact Pet Air Purifier: Home & Kitchen

Amazon.com: Honeywell HHT-011 Compact Air Purifier with Permanent HEPA Filter: Home & Kitchen

Has anyone had success with these products or similar ones? What type of product should be looking for? (filtration? absorption? carbon? hepa?)

Carbon is supposed to "absorb odors", but I've really never had any luck with any kind of odor removal product/machine.

What kind of funk is it? Is it clearly feces/urine, or something else?

Do you use litterbox liners in the litterboxes?

How deep is the litter? Sometimes a thicker, deeper layer of litter can help tremendously (we're talking like 4" deep here.) My cat is a notorious sidebox-urinator, so I literally mound the litter higher/deeper in the areas I know she likes to pee on.

Honestly, I had odor issues too until I uncovered the litterbox. I know that may seem more disgusting than keeping it covered, but even with 2x scoopings a day, the stinks would sit inside the cover and sort of fester.

Is the Everclean litter really dusty? I know it's annoying to keep changing litters, but this is what I use:

Ultra | Precious Cat Litter

It's amazing, hands-down the best litter I've tried in my cat's 14 years of life. It's pretty much dust-free, and keeps odor to a minimum.

I live in a small one bedroom apartment and even my Mother comments she doesnt ever "smell cat". I use Fresh Step cat litter which nips the cat urne and poo smell. I also have a Air Wick plug in in the front and back of the apartment (not a strong smelling one because I get headaches but it works great). I only use Air Wick though. The other plugins dont work as well. I also scoop 2 times daily (I only have one litter box). Make sure to keep the litter boxes far enough away from thebathroom. That can cause problems if they "smell" you.Mine is in my bedroom. Not ideal but....

I get the same compliments! Like I said, there is still random times when poo litter is uncovered or the litter pan itself is hit with spray. If that happens a musk lingers for a while until action is taken (or until it dries out). If im out for a few hours I'm looking for a product to help disperse/clean residual funk.

Sometimes urine, sometimes poo. The litter itself smells fine since its changed every 4 weeks.

No, the underlying plastic has no odor and is washed well every week. If the cat sprays urine on the plastic walls then we have a problem. Usually cleaned out that week (or it dries to the point of not being noticeable)

Litter is around 3", but this doenst help if the cat decides not to cover it.

In my experience, the litter box helps slowly disperse the odor into the room, rather than giving it a full on rush. This allows time for the litter to work and the poo/pee to dry out. If I dont use it the smell is about 20% more apparent. Which once again isnt that bad to begin with. Extremely subtle..but present at times.

Ever clean and Precious cat are great. Ive used both. They arent dusty, but there is a tiny amount of dust with every litter brand.

I have four litterboxes for five cats, scooped twice a day, and I never smell anything unless someone has just pooed. I use arm and hammer litter and have bath and body works air fresheners (frosted cupcake scent) in the outlets nearest the boxes. The air fresheners help, if I unplug them I can smell a difference. I also use litterbox liners, not sure if it helps with odor, but it makes clean up easier.

If you cat is urinating on the wall, even if dried, it may be partially the cause of the odor. If my cat urinates too close to the side (i.e. the clump is partially stuck to the box itself), after removing the clump I will tilt the box away from that side and clean it with a Lysol type deoderant wet wipe (also kills germs/bacteria). I then dry it with a paper towel and redistribute the litter back. Works well.

Thanks. The plastic is cleaned weekly and has absolutely no type of odor (detectable to me from less than 1"). The problem i'm stating is that sometimes a fresh urine will hit the walls. The result is a musky room because the litterbox sits in a small hallway with no windows.

I have the Hamilton Beach air purifier, or one almost identical to it. I don't remember it being marketed as a pet order eliminator, but it looks the same. It seems to help a little bit, I think. What about these Odor Crystals? I have a bag that I keep next to the litter box, and while I can't say it really helps, I figure it's cheap enough to give it a try.

I taped a plastic placemat on the back of the litterboxes because one of my cats(Harli) likes to back up to the very back of the box and sometimes overshoots. Probably a better solution would be to use a storage tote (with a hole cut out for an entrance & no top) as a litter box. That way the sides are high enough that no one can pee over the edge.

Nature's Miracle or some similar type cleaner needs to be sprayed on any areas, walls etc that has been peed on. Otherwise the cat will smell the urine and go in the same place.

The difference that the Honeywell HHT-011 made was astonishing. It moved/broke up odor and made them dissipated very-quickly within the room. The biggest surprise was the amount of DUST and pet hair caught in the prefilter within 3 days. I cant believe that I'm ingesting all of that daily. The unit worked so well, that I decided to return it and go for a even bigger more energy efficient unit - the Winix WAC5500
.
The Winix has a huge carbon filter and moves much more air without any increase in white noise. It also has a auto mode which "detects" odors and cranks up the fan as needed.

These saved my life and I have one sitting on top of both my cat boxes :) I used to live in an apartment with little circulation and I hated my litter boxes until I got one of these. Been using it ever since. I buy the air filter refills specifically for pet odors. They are only like 15 dollars and you only do it ever 4 months. Its super quiet too. You wont hear it. I always keep it on setting 1 and it does the job.

Holmes Air Purifier

I didn't have much problem with poop odor until sometime Jan or Feb this year. The air purifier didn't help very much. I am currently using charcoal and bicarbonate of soda (1kg). But you will need to diy an open box with net to hold these and hang it near the litter box and high enough so kitty can't reach.

Ah, the ol' edge pee-er and non flusher. My Zipper does these too. Doesn't cover and pees over the side. Until you get home there isn't much you can do. Maybe install one of those auto air fresheners in the hallway like Penny135 suggests?? Caution: I put one in the laundry room over the litter boxes and Sam started pooping in the LR. It was a hard habit to break but I think it was because the auto freshener was too close to the boxes- no real proof of that though, just a suspicion.
