Ok, now I'm sure she's weird!

I have found out by trying this three times.

I absolutely cannot eat pistachios in front of The DustBunny. She...well, goes nuts. She wants the nutshells really bad. I usually put the shells in a small cup or bag while I'm eating them and she goes after the shells like they are some kind of wonderful delicacy. She chews them and swats them everywhere. She's obsessed with pistachio shells. I dropped one that almost fell under the couch, I didn't see it right away and she of course snatched it up and chewed it, played with it and generally went crazy with it until I came back in the room and took it away from her.

Now I am not going to let her have pistachio shells for all the obvious reasons, salt, choking hazard, etc. I do have to wonder why she is crazy for pistachio shells and if they could be poisonous to cats.

Anyone have any input on this?

Oh, God, Sundance used to go nuts over them too. (Pun truly not intended! Ha! Ha!) He also LOVED olives, potato chips and vinagrette salad dressing, so I assume it was the salt.
I'm sure they aren't poisonous as long as he isn't actually eating them. I know almonds can be but I really don't know about pistachios. I don't think so.

I don't know about poisonous, but I think they are definately dangerous. :)

I love pistachios too. I shell them with my teeth. Those shells are SHARP. Once, in the process of shelling them, I sliced open the roof of my mouth.

It took weeks to heal. When I went for a cleaning, the dentist was shocked by the extent of the damage. Keep an eye on those shells, if you can.

Ouch. I'm glad I always shell them with my fingers.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever eaten any other kind of nuts in front of The DustBunny. I'll have to get some Brazil nuts or peanuts and see if she goes after the shells. Then I'll know if it's just pistachios or any kind of nutshell.
