Hi all. It looks like my kitten is coming home on the 23rd. I talked to the breeder yesterday and she said to feed wet food, not fish flavored, not Blue Buffalo, a couple of times a day. No other direction. I went and bought the dry food they've been using but I couldn't bring myself to buy the little cans lol!

Is there something I could make myself?

Just wondering what it was about the little cans that spooked you? :p

I've never tried to make my own, but I'm sure others here have.

A lot of people say that a raw diet is the best way to go, since it's the closest to what cats would naturally be eating (that's also why she recommended no fish). There's a subforum here on raw food diets, and there are several people who make their own. Maybe you can find some ideas there.

So just one more week until you have kitty! :D

Just wondering why not Blue Buffalo, do you know?

I'd suggest you try giving all different types of quality wet food, though. Try different brands, proteins, and textures so you don't get a finicky cat later on!

Never tried making my own cat food either...it would involve extra time and effort into buying a variety of things...

Looking at older threads have definitely helped me before, though!
Hope others can also write you of their thoughts and opinions.

I have not looked into it nor do I really care to since I don't use it, but right now Purina is suing Blue Buffalo because Purina purchased some of their "Grain free" foods and extensively tested them and found out that they DO have grains in them as well as some other things they state the food is free of.

That could be why someone would recommend against Blue Buffalo.

Oh, they're still gross. :) Some more gross than others...Celia stopped liking the rabbit flavor wet food, thank goodness. Even the rabbit dry smells awful.

A variety of textures and flavors. My girls eat pate only, but a lot of cats will eat anything but pate. Maybe a pate, a sliced, a shredded...? There are so many choices it's mindboggling.

Years ago, when Celia wouldn't eat, the vet suggested I buy the cheapest grocery store brand I could find, because it had the "strongest" smell. LOL.

I think Weruva was the only one of all the gazillion brands I tried that didn't smell (or look!) like cat food. Too bad my girls wouldn't eat it. In general, chicken seems to be milder than other proteins.

But rabbit...I've tried Hound & Gatos and NV Instinct. Wow. Pungent.

Rocky and Lily love their Merrick. They have many flavors without fish and no ingredients from China. Dave's is also good if you can get it where you are :)

Wow...how did I miss that one!

But...caution...just because Purina says it's true, doesn't mean it is. They have a history of this sort of thing...and losing the case. I'm not the biggest BB fan, but I'm smelling some sour grapes here. BTW...BB has counter sued.

Probably....but they're losing ground, which is probably the impetus for this lawsuit. Of the natural/higher end food companies, BB has the largest market share (I don't know what the % is though). That's part of the reason they're the target and their latest advertising has been pretty confrontational.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out...I think someone should sue Purina for their Beneful commercials as false advertising.
