What are Healthy Cat Foods?

Hi all!! I recently found out how bad dry food was for cats!! Especially the brands you see in all retail stores. So I've started exploring some healthy options to make sure my cat doesn't have any health effects down the road.

I recently just tried a trial size of Honest Kitchen and my cat would not go near it, so I threw it out and did some more research.

I found myself seeing positive reviews with Wellness so I picked up Wellness Core & some Wellness wet food. I thought feeding her half dry and half wet would be better for her so she gets the water and benefits from the wet food that she doesn't get from the dry. She seems to like it. However, today I was reading more reviews and A LOT of people were saying it caused urinary crystals.

I'm planning on returning the food today, but I really want some help on what to get my cat that is healthy for her and I don't have to worry. So if you know of some options please let me know so I can look them up. OR if you can link reviews that would be so helpful.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm just a concerned parent haha!

NVI is great food. The only thing I don't like about it is that I end up picking out those bits of carrots and peas...but there's usually not too much in there, compared to other brands.

I also feed Tiki Cat in chicken flavors only, Wild Calling, First Mate, Merrick Purrfect Bistro (lots of flavors & textures), and Wellness grain-free.

I don't think feeding Wellness canned will translate to urinary crystals, in my research and readings it seems most cat owners who experience it always fed their cat some form of dry prior to their first run-in with crystals/blockages. I believe prevention is the key here, but that's my personal view.

My cat gets Nature Variety Instinct dry food, Blue Wilderness and Wellness canned food. If I go to the health store, where I pick up our dogs food, then I buy other canned foods (Canidae/Felidae, etc). Dry & wet food is grain free
Tried the "Pride by Instinct" and she didn't like it.

Grain free canned only here.

A basic list of what they eat is... Evangers, Wild Calling, Red Barn, Wellness, By Nature, Hound and Gato, Instinct, Merrick's, Weruva, Halo, Evo, Dave's, and a few others that escape me at the moment

Apparently, dry food in general is thought to cause urinary crystals because cats aren't driven to drink water (like dogs do) so they end up getting dehydrated and that's what causes the crystals. At least that's what I understood!

What reviews were you reading that said that? For the dry food I assume?

Yeah I was on Amazon reading review after review of people having that problem on the dry food. I personally had no idea dry food was bad for cats so for the first 3 years she was on dry food, and luckily had no problems. But I want to make sure she has the best health.

She also drinks a lot of water because she loves when I turn on the faucet so maybe that's how she stayed hydrated. Either way I think adding half wet food will help her get more water in her diet.

Haha thanks for the tips guys! And I guess I did feed her wet food probably once a week as a treat (who wants to eat boring dry food their whole life?) But now I think she will be a happier cat getting some everyday. Hopefully she doesn't lose all interest in the faucet because its super cute lol

My ferals are on Taste of the Wild Venison that I soak with warm water until it swells up mixed with either canned food Nulo, Science diet, fancy feast, Wellness or Nature Variety Raw instincts. I soaked the food so they are not dehydrated from eating dry food since I can't afford to give the can food 2x a day for the 9-12 feral cats that come. They already are living a hard life so at least eating a good meal could at least prolong their lives.

I used to feed wellness canned only but switched to holistic select as there is no carrageen in it.
Just noticed ziwipeak which has no Guam ingredients or carrageen so going to try that when my order comes in.
Holistic select has one of the Guam ingredients in it so want to swap
