Hi everyone :) I'm approaching my first winter with Meowmie, and as I'm already starting to shiver from the cold in my apartment, I'm curious as to how and if I'll know if Meowmie isn't enjoying the cold. I don't want her to get sick or anything! Sometimes when she's laying down or sleeping I cover her with a blanket but she doesn't really like it that much when she's awake and likes to step out of it. So I'm a little worried about her ):

You can but a cat bed she might use it I know most cats don't. I know at petsmart there is a plush kitty sack if your cat likes to hide in small spaces you can try that has for if you can tell if she is not enjoying the cold if she sleeps right next to you at night my older cat did that and so does my younger cat the older cat did it cause she was cold my younger cat does it cause I'm his human mom.

Cats can generally handle a cool living environment quite well, so unless your apartment is consistently below zero, you really needn't worry. Exceptions to this would be hairless cats, elderly cats, and cats with chronic illnesses who may not be able to maintain adequate body temp without some help. Assuming your cat doesn't fall into any of those categories, she will find places to snuggle into if she gets uncomfortably cool, like a fluffy comforter on your bed or a fluffy towel placed in a small box.

My cats love to be warm. When I had Precious and Blueberry (Siamese), they loved it when I started a fire in the fireplace! (I can't stand to be cold!) They stood in front of the blower. And if there was no fire built, they liked the top of the VCR which was warm. If I lay down for a nap, I could be sure they would lie down with me, and I had two bed buddies.

Nina (Balinese) is very fluffy, but she still enjoys cozying in at night. However, if it's a warm day, she likes the bathtub, the slate entrance...anything cool. I guess it depends on the thickness of the coat. I also think, like us, they have their own preferences. Most of my cats liked to keep warm, and especially liked the electric blanket. :)

My girls don't really like being covered up, they prefer being curled up on top of things. So in the winter I make sure some of their favorite blankets are arranged in a nest shape so they can curl up and get the added warmth of the humped edge without being covered. Even when Fergie was recovering from surgery and was always shivering with her shaved belly she wouldn't tolerate me covering her up - the only way I could keep her snuggled up warm and cozy was to sit on the toilet with fleece pants around my ankles and she would curl up in them! :?

Bingo. They like to get that nest around them.

Fay doesn't mind the cold buy my short haired Siamese will burrow under blankets. I have a waterbed in a spare bedroom that she takes over in the winter. I have the heater set on max so it's too warm for me to sleep in but she'll burrow under the covers in there. If Meowmie looks cold see if you can put some blankes on top of something warm. I'm assuming you've paid your $75 fire department fee before you put blankets on a heater.

Oh, I also put a heating pad set on low on the couch under a towel. They both love that.

They don't like the Snuggie as much as I thought they would. It's just not the right material.

I'm a wimp about the cold... if it's below 65F, I'm miserable... so my apartment is usually about 66-70F. I also have a heated mattress pad, so my bed is usually quite warm. I got that instead of an electric blanket, because since heat goes up, I figured it would make more sense for the warmth to be under me, rather than draped over me.
There are heated pads you can get for pet beds. Plug-in kinds and microwavable kinds. Or maybe even just use one of those rice bags that you microwave... but be sure that's done carefully, because it can burn if not heated right or set up right.

Thanks everyone, that makes me feel a lot better :) Meowmie has been sleeping more on top of my laptop recently so I think I'm going to get something warm that she can snuggle into. Throughout the say she's fine, it's just at night the roommates like to turn the tempurature down/open windows and it can get a bit chilly!

I use a clamp-on lamp that has a metal reflector with a 40 - 60 watt light bulb over his bed. It's about 16 inches above the bed and the temp on the bed is around 85. All the kitties I've had have loved it. I've also used a heating pad, set very, very low on my bed. Since I fear fire from electric heating pads, it was only on while I was in the room. But I can leave the light on all the time. If kitty gets too warm he finds another cozy spot.

A friend had a heated cat bed that only went on when the cat was in it and turned off when cat left. Probably pretty $$$$ Don't know where she got it.

Penny and Rocky prefer plush, soft fleece-like blankets, while Princess prefers just fleece. They all like it to be arranged in a nest-like shape. I think they enjoy the security and warmth of it. Penny also likes to burrow under covers and be in enclosed spaces such as a crib.
They also curl up in your lap more often. :)

In the Summer they all prefer to lay on the window seat in the sun or on the cool wood or tile floor in the sun. Or in a shoe box that they are much to big for.

They have all dissed every bed bought for them.

And Rocky thoroughly enjoys sleeping in Spike's crate.

My cat Gracie took to one of those heated cat pads made for indoor use that I found on Amazon. Can find it many places. That's just where I bought it.

It fits nicely on the rattan chair she likes to sleep on. I plugged it in the other night (first cold night in months) and she slept on it most of the night. During the winter I even put it on a timer so I did not have to bother turning it on and off. It held up great last year. Nice thing to have, as she is not much a kittie to hop on the bed, nor would she go for a cat bed, heated or unheated.
